Males have green markings, with the last three segments of the abdomen being blue. Females are green.
A very common dragonfly in the south of England and Wales will often visit ponds even in small gardens to lay there eggs, on one such occasion a work colleague told me how when cleaning out his pond in his garden, he found these large ugly creatures and threw them on the lawn, not knowing what they were, and surprised when I told him, the were a large dragonfly nymph, he later found some more hiding in the weed and I fed them in a fish tank, until they climbed up sticks provided and shed there nymphal skin, into a dragonfly which were the Southern Hawker.
